Lyrics
The lyrics of the song addresses a substance abuse issue and overdose scare as well as his fears for his own life, asking his lover to remind him of who he is and draw him out of his problem.
Critical reception
According to the 'Billboard', "Alone Again" was ranked the ninth best song from the 'After Hours' album with its twinkling synths that sets the heavy throwback tone of the album early on. With smooth production assists from DaHeala, Illangelo, and Frank Dukes, the Daft Punk-esque instrumentation of the song gives way to toe tap-inducing trap bass, while lyrics tells about substance abuse showcase the Weeknds go-to narrative.
Commercial performance
Following the releasing of its parent album, "Alone Again" charted at number 21 on the US 'Billboard' Hot 100 dated April 4, 2020. It was the fourth-highest charting track from 'After Hours'. Also, it charted at number 28, 30, 49, 22, 24, 51, and 10 on the Canadian Hot 100, Estonia, France, Greece, Portugal, Sweden and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, respectively.
