The song's lyrics project themes of sexual liberation and awakening. Although the song only features the vocals of female singers Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, the band has noted that Fred Schneider was a driving force behind the lyrics. The music was written by the band's guitarist Keith Strickland.
