'The Wonder' is a 2022 psychological period drama film directed by Sebastin Lelio from a screenplay by Emma Donoghue, Lelio, and Alice Birch. Adapted from the 2016 novel of the same name by Donaghue, the film stars Florence Pugh, Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy, Kla Lord Cassidy, Toby Jones, Dermot Crowley, Bran F. OByrne and Ciarn Hinds.

'The Wonder' had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, and is scheduled for limited theatrical release on November 2, 2022, before streaming on Netflix on November 16, 2022.

Production



On April 28, 2021, it was announced that Florence Pugh was set to star in Sebastin Lelio's adaptation of 'The Wonder'.

As of August 12, 2021, principal photography has begun in Ireland. Accompanying the announcement of the start of production, it was reported that Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy, Kla Lord Cassidy, Toby Jones, Ciarn Hinds, Dermot Crowley, Bran F. O'Byrne, and David Wilmot had joined the cast.

Release



'The Wonder' premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, followed by a screening at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2022. It will have its European premiere at the 70th San Sebastin International Film Festival in September 2022. It is scheduled for release on Netflix on November 16, 2022, following a limited theatrical release on November 2.

Reception



On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 'The Wonder' holds a score of 81% based on 16 reviews with an average of 6.7/10. On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the film holds a score of 72 out of 100 based on 9 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

Reviewing the film following its premiere at Telluride, David Ehrlich of 'IndieWire' called it a "sumptuous but slightly undercooked tale", praising the Lelios direction, cast performances, cinematography, and score. Peter Bruge praised the cast performances in his review for 'Variety' but criticized the screenplay, summarizing it as an "evenhanded but ultimately preposterous adaptation". 'The Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Farber found it an "illuminating study of dark prejudices" and commended Pughs performance and Lelios direction, which he remarks represents perhaps his "finest achievement to date".
