'Reprisal' is a 2018 American action thriller film directed by Brian A. Miller and written by Bryce Hammons. The film stars Bruce Willis, Frank Grillo, Johnathon Schaech, and Olivia Culpo.

Synopsis

The plot is about the increasing interactions between a bank manager - the victim - and an intelligent but psychotic and sociopathic bank robber. Jacob works as bank manager in a local bank. He is married and has a pre-teen daughter who has aggressive Type I Diabetes. The family has some financial difficulties, as most Americans did between 2001 to about 2015, and are barely managing to get by each month. Before Jacob goes to work on that fateful day, we see the bank robber make an anonymous call to the police stating a bridge is armed with a bomb. This ensures law enforcement will be focused on that. After arriving at work, Jacob briefs everyone regarding the threats and calms them as they begin their day. The bank is then invaded by the robber who shoots at everything and everybody. There are numerous injuries and one fatality - the bank's lone security guard. The robber grabs Jacob and another employee, forcing them to open the safe and load up the money for him. They are then each zip-tied to small money bags containing exploding dye and both are placed at the vestibule to distract the police so he can easily escape out the back, which has no security cameras. All involved are taken to the police station for questioning. Jacob gives his statement and is released to go home. While sitting outside having a drink, his neighbor James, a retired cop, visits to see how he is doing. Not long after, James and Jacob begin to study and analyze not only the local robbery, but those in neighboring states that he has committed. They deduce many things about the robber from the heavy armor he wears, the fact that he uses only a motorcycle, used a rare door lock, the style of gun, and his pattern of hitting a bank every 3 days or so. Jacob continues to study the crime further but his wife does not want him doing this for fear of how this will affect their daughters fragile health. Jacob drives around trying to find the home base of the robber and out of sheer luck discovers it. It is an abandoned, rundown factory loaded with tactical gear and practice targets. Jacob observes the robber. He finds boxes with his name on the labels and rips off one. We learn his name is Gabriel and that his next target is an armored car. Jacob safely ducks out and returns home. After much discussion with James, it is decided that Jacob will intercept the robbery. During the robbery, there is endless gunfire and serious injuries. Gabriel gets away with the money after severely wounding Mribel, one of the armored car guards. Jacob sees Gabriel stash the money in an out- of-the-way place and takes the money. Gabriel returns for the money and is furious to find it gone. He knows exactly who took it and makes plans to get "his" money back. Gabriel kidnaps Jacob's wife and daughter. He then tracks Mribel to the hospital and has her call Jacob to lure him out. He then shoots Mribel in the head. Jacob enlists James' help to save his family. At the outdoor meeting place for the hostage-money exchange, along with other police officers, the two confront Gabriel. He is now armed with an assault rifle, which leads to a very bloody shootout. The shootout ends when James, armed with just a shotgun, shoots Gabriel four times causing him to fall over a railing at the top of a staircase and land on the pavement below. The family is reunited. Six months later, we see Jacob going to his car to go to work escorted by his wife and we hear hints that he no longer works at the bank. They find a note on the car from James along with a presumeably Catholic medallion for the patron saint of police officers. Jacob has a new job and career, and this is his first day as a rookie police officer. We also learn that he received the 75k for the FBI bounty on Gabriel. Thus, begins Jacob's journey as a police officer - inspired by his father, a cop killed in the line of duty, and his neighbor, veteran officer, James.
