'Thartharat' is a 1989 Indian Marathi-language action-comedy film written and directed by Mahesh Kothare, produced by Arvind Samant and edited by Vishwas-Anil. Released in India on 1 January 1989, it stars Laxmikant Berde, Mahesh Kothare, Priya Arun-Berde, Nivedita Joshi-Saraf, Deepak Shirke and Rahul Solapurkar in lead roles. It is about a police officer Mahesh and a journalist Lakshya who protect the village of Shrirangpur, Maharashtra which is terrorised by a goon Taklu Haiwan.

Plot



In Mumbai, CID Inspector Mahesh Jadhav (Mahesh Kothare) is a young policeman who is hired to capture the infamous goon Taklu Haiwan (Rahul Solapurkar), who is terrorising the city. Mahesh then befriends Uma Desai (Nivedita Joshi-Saraf), who is a journalist of Apradh Newspaper. Meanwhile, in the village of Shrirangpur, Maharashtra, Uma's cousin-brother Laxmikant Ghorpade aka Lakshya (Laxmikant Berde) is a young journalist of Jhunjaar Newspaper, which is suffering from bad sales due to its competitor Apradh. Everyone have hopes that Lakshya will help him increase the sales but he instead spends all of his time with his girlfriend Ganga (Priya Arun-Berde), who is the daughter of the arrogant policeman Constable 100 (Deepak Shirke) who disapproves of their relationship. To help everyone increase the sales, with the help of Ganga, Lakshya publishes a fake news that Taklu Haiwan's gang has terrorised Shrirangpur which angers Constable 100. His idea works and the newspaper gets good marketing, but Uma and Mahesh get transferred to the village to help the villagers. Mahesh discovers the truth and decides not to believe Lakshya anymore. However, after a few days, the two are shocked to learn that the gang has terrorised the village in real. Lakshya and Mahesh protect Shrirangpur from Taklu Haiwan.

Filming



Thartharat was shot in Mumbai and Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The scene of Mahesh Kothare trying to trap Taklu Haiwan's two henchmen was shot at Park View Hotel, Mumbai. The scene of Laxmikant Berde praying to Lord Ganesha for a special news was shot at Jaiprabha Studio, Kolhapur.
