Plot

Narendra Kuber (Sachin Pilgaonkar) is a rich educated boy who returns to India after graduating in America. His father Lakshmidhar Kuber (Nilu Phule) who is a wealthy businessman, throws a grand party for his return along with Narendra's mother Laxmi Kuber (Shubha Khote). Meanwhile, Shaku (Supriya Pilgaonkar) is a poor orphaned girl living in a slum in Mumbai who wishes to marry a millionaire. According to her, a girl has the chance to change her name and situation only after her marriage. She arrives at the Kubers' party as a servant and overhears Narendra expressing his wish to his friends of marrying a "widow" as he would not have time to fulfill all his wife's wishes. Having fallen in love with him, she swears to marry him at any cost and transforms herself into a homeless widow named "Saudamini Rangade". She meets Narendra on the streets and asks him to rescue her from some goons (who are in fact her accquaintances). After Narendra fights against them, Saudamini pretends to fall unconscious, causing him to bring her home. The next day, she meets Narendra's parents and pretends to be ill in order to stay at their house for a few more days. She is quickly accepted by Narendra and Laxmi. Narendra slowly grows close to Saudamini and unknowingly falls in love with her. He proposes to her and she agrees to marry him, taking advantage of his feelings. However, Narendra's parents object to their marriage by saying that Saudamini's deceased husband's name is not known. She lies to them that her husband was a military officer. When asked for photograph, she shows them a random one and lies to them that it is her late husband's photograph. Lakshmidhar and Laxmi agree for their marriage. Meanwhile, the photograph which Saudamini had shown to everyone was of Dinkar Luktuke (Ashok Saraf), a poor office employee who lives under the staircase of a building. Lakshmidhar coincidentally visits an office and bumps into him. Realising Saudamini's ploy, he instructs Luktuke to act in a place with the promise of a luxurious house for his living. According to his instructions, Luktuke transforms himself into Saudamini's husband named "Captain Bajirao Rangade" and enters the Kubers' house, leaving everyone shocked. He tries to prove to everyone that he is Saudamini's "alive" husband who has arrived to take her back to his house after recovering from a coma. However, Narendra and Laxmi refuse to believe him while Lakshmidhar pretends to believe that he is Saudamini's husband in order to test her honesty. Saudamini tries to convince everyone that Captain Rangade is not her husband by lying that her husband had six toes on his left leg. Unfortunately, everyone ends up discovering that Captain Rangade has indeed six toes on his left leg. Lakshmidhar is thankful towards the situation while Narendra and Laxmi still refuse to accept Captain Rangade as Saudamini's husband. Laxmi even asks Saudamini to sleep with her and Lakshmidhar to sleep with Captain Rangade. After a couple of days, Narendra asks Captain Rangade to divorce Saudamini with the promise of 100000. However, he refuses the deal and confronts Lakshmidhar over his job in a drunken state in front of Laxmi who is suspicious of him. Lakshmidhar eventually declares that Captain Rangade is Saudamini's husband, leaving Narendra heartbroken. He even hands over all his wealth to Saudamini along with Laxmi. However, Saudamini obtains Lakshmidhar's gun and shoots Captain Rangade fatally. She reveals her real identity and reason behind entering the house to everyone. Lakshmidhar reveals that he had already planted fake bullets in the gun and Captain Rangade thus happens to be alive. Lakshmidhar also reveals that he had only sent Luktuke to the house and that he had already learnt about Shaku's real identity from Damodar. He even agrees for their marriage and Luktuke apologises to everyone. In the end, Narendra and Shaku get married.
