'Melu Kolupu' ( 'Awakening') is a 1978 Telugu-language drama film, produced by A. Pundarikakshaiah under the Sri Bhaskara Chitra and directed by B. V. Prasad. It stars N. T. Rama Rao, Jaya Prada, K. R. Vijaya and music composed by Master Venu. The film is a remake of the Hindi movie 'Jagriti' (1977).

Plot



The film begins with Dayanidhi (Nagabhushanam) and Parabrahmam (Prabhakar Reddy), petty thieves quitting jail. Soon after, they pose as social workers and respectable persons. But they perpetrate many activities such as exploiting orphan children in the line of crime and women trafficking under the umbra of welfare societies. Ramu (Master Raja Krishna) and Chitti Babu (Chalam) are a few thieves among their gang. Once, Ramu meets a woman Susheela (Jaya Prada) who lives as a prostitute but protects her chastity. Ramu is affectionate towards her and takes care of, her as his sister. The Govt. appoints a special CID Officer Shekar (N. T. Rama Rao) to block these scandals. Once, Ramu is caught by Shekar and sends him to a Juvenile home. In the home, Ramu is reformed under the guidance of warden Shanti Devi (K. R. Vijaya). Meanwhile, Shekar is behind Dayanidhi & Brahmam and waiting for an opportunity to catch them. In between Shekar recognizes Susheela as his past love who has been extorted into this profession. Here, he wholeheartedly accepts her and relieves her. Meanwhile, Ramu releases and decides to make straight the remaining associates. So, he reenters the gang, works as an informer to Shekar, transforms his gang, and enacts them as good citizens. Simultaneously, Dayanidhi's racket is about to collapse, so, he kidnaps Susheela. Finally, Shekar with the help of Ramu and Shanti Devi ceases the baddies.
