'Mutiny in the Big House' is a 1939 American film directed by William Nigh.
Plot
Father Joe Collins is a humane but realistic Prison Chaplain(Bickford) who attempts to bring hope behind the walls
of a major penitentiary.
One of his victories is when kindly convict Dad Schultz(George Cleveland) is released after 20 years;only to find the outside world so over-
whelming that he suffers a nervous breakdown.
Collins convinces the prison board to take him back as a prison gardener/civilian employee;so he'll feel "at home" again.
Collins also takes an interest in JOhnny Davis(Moore),an educated inmate who received an overly stiff sentence
for forging a $10.00 check.
Hardened lifer Red Manson(Mac Lane) does his best to undermine Father Collins' influence among the inmates;while plotting a mass
prison break.
When the prison break begins,Moore fires a rifle wildly to prevent Father Collins from being taken hostage.The
distraction enables the guards to regain control of the prison.
Moore is headed towards early release.Manson,who killed two guards during the riot;is headed to Death Row execution.
