'Women Talking' is a 2022 American drama film written and directed by Sarah Polley, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Miriam Toews. The film stars Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw, and Frances McDormand (who is also a producer on the film).

It had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, and will be theatrically released (limited) in the United States on December 2, 2022, by United Artists Releasing.

Synopsis



In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling their reality with their faith. Based on the novel by Miriam Toews.

Production



In December 2020, it was reported that Frances McDormand would star in the film, which would be written and directed by Sarah Polley. In June 2021, Ben Whishaw, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy and Michelle McLeod joined the cast of the film. Hildur Gunadttir composed the film's score.

Principal photography took place from July 19 to September 10, 2021, in Toronto.

Release



It had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022. It also screened at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, 2022, followed by a screening at the 60th New York Film Festival in October 2022. It will be theatrically released in the United States on December 2, 2022.

Reception



The film received acclaim from critics, who praised Polley's direction, the performances of the cast, screenplay, cinematography and score. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a score of 88% based on 34 reviews, with an average rating of 8.1/10. On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 80 out of 100 based on 13 reviews.

Accolades

Polley received the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion tribute award. Composer Hildur Gunadttir received a tribute award at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
