'Vezham' https://dt.madurai.io/%E0%AE%B5%E0%AF%87%E0%AE%B4%E0%AE%AE%E0%AF%8D is a 2022 Indian Tamil language romantic thriller film written and directed by Sandeep Shyam. Produced by K4 Kreations, the film stars Ashok Selvan, Janani, and Iswarya Menon in lead roles. 'Jhanu Chanthar' is the music composer of this film who is primarily a guitarist who has played for many composers and a part in various music bands. Cinematographer George C. Williams associate Shakthi Aravind is the cinematographer of the movie.
Ashok Selvan has played the character of an innocent youngster who leads a peaceful life and when a tragedy creates a turmoil in his life, the film explores different shades of his character. Janani plays a writer in the film while Iswarya Menon plays the role of a girl from an elite background based in Ooty. The film was released in theatres on 24 June 2022.
Plot
The story begins with a bunch of people seeing a dead body in Ooty, which is linked to a psycho killer on the loose. A few days later, a young couple Ashok and Leena went for a drive for Leena's birthday. On the night when they tried to return home, a car ended up stopping in the middle of the road. Ashok tried to adjust the car since the driver left the keys and there was no sight of the driver. However, Leena was missing. On the search for her, he was blindfolded by the killer.
The film flashforwards for 5 years when Ashok has remained traumatic from the incident. This issue has led to his girlfriend dead. Everyone around him told him to move on but Ashok revealed that he cannot because the killer's voice still haunts him to this day. Meanwhile, the police officer has told Ashok that there was no latest update about the case. Ashok has told him to summarise the case again. 12 October 2014, the first victim Gowri was raped and murdered. On 14 October 2014, the second victim who was the upcoming minister's son was murdered. On 17 October 2014, the third victim Leena was murdered. Ashok would have been the fourth victim of the case but he survived. He was saved by one of the police officers called Francis. On 20 October 2014, an unknown man was the fourth victim. The only evidence the police collected was that all of the victims has an 'X' carved out on their shoulders, Ashok included.
As soon as Ashok returned home, an unknown woman told him to leave. Ashok revealed that he owns this house. Turns out, that his friend Karthik wanted to invite his girlfriend Divya and her friend Preethi to stay at Ashok's home but did not tell Ashok. The woman who thought Ashok was a trespasser was Preethi. For a few days, Preethi tried to get to know Ashok but he keeps distancing himself. One night, Preethi was on the phone and did not notice that a motorcyclist has been driving past. The two men on the motorcycle stopped and had a go at her. This angered Ashok and chased them. He caught one of them and asked them to say "If you want to be alive then be quiet", which turns out it was not the guys that Ashok was looking for. This was because the voice was the only thing Ashok can remember about the incident. The next day, Preethi asked Karthik to tell him about Ashok and Leena. That night when Karthik and Divya are out, Preethi and Ashok are alone. Preethi told him that she was aware of Leena's death. Ashok realised that Preethi is a writer and thinks she wants to know about her death for her book. Preethi then asked about the personal relationship between him and Leena.
Ashok revealed his life. He and Leena were childhood friends. Both of their mothers died and always felt lonely. Ashok's mother died when he was younger and lived with his father and his sister. His sister is 10 years older and when she went off to college, he became lonely. On the other hand, after Leena's mother's death, her father left her with her maternal grandfather. Expecting her father to come back he never did and she was raised by her grandfather. That friendship turned into love. When Leena's grandfather died, she had nowhere to stay so Ashok invited her to his home. Weeks later, a police officer came to visit and revealed his name is Francis and Leena's cousin. Turns out, her grandfather also had a son but he married outside his religion and her grandfather disowned him, and Francis is her uncle's son. Both of them became close to Francis and his family. Things went sweet until Leena's absentee father returned. Leena did not forgive him at first until he revealed that he has cancer and is going to die. Both of them welcomed him home. Leena and her father went to Singapore for a few months because of her father's health, which affected the couple because they always had been co-dependent on each other. The psycho murder started to happen once Leena returned to Singapore. She returned earlier at night for a surprise only to see her housekeeper Gowri raped and murdered. Since her death, she started to feel depressed and lonely. Ashok cheered her up by going for a drive, which led to Leena's death.
After hearing about his story, Preethi started to fall in love with him. She revealed her love for him and told him that he does not love her as much but he has shown some signs of him liking her. This makes Ashok awkward to be around her. Preethi did expect him to at least respond and told him to move on and not to take revenge because that would not bring Leena alive. One day, when Ashok was drinking tea, a deaf and mute guy went to buy a cigarette and recognised Ashok. Ashok ended up realising that he was one of the killers. This was because he revealed to Francis the day after the incident that one of them was deaf and mute. Ashok stalked him to his home. He ended up getting attacked by him and by his brother who was the guy's voice Ashok has been looking for. Ashok killed the deaf and mute brother but the other brother revealed that they were hired to kill Leena by a guy named Kaasi and turns out he was the fourth victim. Ashok went to find out more about Kaasi until when the old man who Ashok knew told him that Francis was returning from Kaasi's house. This all happened when the election was happening. Ashok went to visit Francis and accused him that he murdered Leena. Francis denied all this but later revealed everything.
Upcoming MLA Mariyappan's three sons trespassed to Leena's home and gangraped Gowri. This was because Gowri has rejected Mariyappan's youngest son Chinna's proposal. Since this has damaged Chinna's ego he has called his brothers to gangrape her and kill her afterwards. His brothers make fun of Chinna for not being manly enough. Once they have returned home, Chinna was insulted by his brother's words and drank alcohol. He returned to the place and dragged Gowri and raped her again. Leena who was supposed to return in the morning but instead returned earlier to surpise Ashok. Ashok went to Bangalore for a job interview. When Leena returned home, she saw Gowri's dead body and noticed that Chinna has raped her and killed him. Out of panic, she called Francis and told what happened. Francis has helped her hide the body. He also decided to make up a psychopath on the loose story so they would not suspect Leena for murder, by adding the 'X' mark on both Gowri and Chinna's shoulder. Francis has told Leena to call the police in the morning and say that she has returned home and saw Gowri's body and not to tell anyone- including Ashok about this. Meanwhile, Francis has taken Chinna's dead body and make a display that he died two days after Gowri. Francis has bugged Chinna's elder brother Selvam's room and turns out that Chinna made a video intentionally to show to his brothers but led to him being killed by Leena. Mariyappan and Selvam wants to kill Leena but Mariyappan's right-hand man Kaasi said that neither of them should get involve because it will affect the election. This was when Kaasi hired the two brother to kill Leena. Ashok nearly would have died until Francis saved him because he was aware that both of them have went out for Leena's birthday.
Ashok asked him to help him for one task. Ashok ended up kidnapping Selvam. Ashok and Selvam both were fighting each other. Meanwhile, Selvam's driver called the police to reveal that he has been kidnapped and the only evidence was the truck (as the truck was blocking the road and Selvam asked him to move it). The truck disappeared and same with the car marks which makes the police accuse that the driver was lying. As soon as Ashok was going to kill Selvam, he revealed that Ashok was involved in Chinna's death because Chinna called Selvam and heard his voice at the back. Ashok killed him. On the same night, it wa revealed that Mariyappan was bedridden and Ashok snuck in and killed him. This is to show to people that the psychopath from 5 years ago is back. Ashok was confused about the night of Chinna's murder. When Ashok waited for Francis and his family to sneak out. He trespassed and hacked into his computer. He then found out that Leena thought she killed Chinna but injured him and when she has left, he called his brother and that's when he has heard of Francis's voice. This was stopped by Francis himself and tried to kill Ashok. When Ashok was trying to kill Francis, Francis' phone rang and turns out it was Leena which shocked Ashok.
Francis revealed that he wanted his grandfather's property. He and his father tried to convince Francis' grandfather to accept them but declined. He grew up to be jealous of Leena because she got her grandfather's affection. He had the intention of killing Leena to gain her property of their grandfather's house. That was when Gowri's murder has came through which Francis used his advantage. He knew the camera was recorded when the incident occurred but he edited this and put the phone in Chinna's pocket to make it look like it was Leena who murdered him, but it was actually Francis who murdered him and Selvam has heard Francis' voice instead. Francis also asked Leena's father to help him because he wanted to things: (1) the property and (2) Leena and Ashok to be together, because Francis has noticed the double standards between him and her. While their grandfather could not accept his parent's relationship due to interreligious, he was accepting Leena's relationship with Ashok. When Francis looked at their grandfather's will he noticed that all the property goes to Leena but after her death it goes to the church. That was when Francis realised that he cannot kill Leena. While he framed Chinna's murder to Leena, he felt bad and saved Kaasi from killing Leena and killed Kaasi himself. Francis got a lookalike to Leena to show that she has died and got her father and Ashok's sister to confirm the body. Francis lied to Leena that Ashok is dead and Leena's father emotionally blackmailed her move away to Goa and give the property to Francis. Francis also revealed the Ashok that he should move on himself because Leena is now married and has a child. Francis also wanted Ashok to thank him for saving his life as well.
Heartbroken, Ashok went to see Leena with her family from a distance and noticed how happy she was. Ashok starts to realise that he should move on. He reciprocated Preethi's love. A month later, Ashok has killed Francis and when he was washing his hand, he has noticed blood stains not washing off from his hands. Only to realise that it was an illusion and has felt guilty for the man that saved his life's murder.

Production
In 2019, the production team announced the principal cast of the film included Ashok Selvan, Janani and Iswarya Menon. Janani reunited with Ashok Selvan which marks their second collaboration after the critically acclaimed movie Thegidi. The team later roped in veteran actors Raja Krishnamoorthy, Sangili Murugan, Marathi actor Padmashree Mohan Agashe and producer P. L. Thenappan. Shyam sundhar a new comer who had earlier been part of the director's short film was also announced as a part of the cast.
Music
The movie's original score is done by 'Jhanu chanthar' . The film's soundtrack has four songs in varied genres.'Dhooram' track written and sung by Pradeep Kumar. Shakthisree Gopalan has sung an enigmatic number 'Meendum' written by Shivam and a debutant Deepika Karthik Kumar has written and sung a romantic number 'Maarum urave'. Pradeep also has sung a sad version of "Dhooram".
Release
The film was released in theatres on 24 June 2022 with the production associating with SP Cinemas for worldwide release.
