Wikipedia article

'Tr' (stylized in all caps as 'TR') is a 2022 psychological drama film written and directed by Todd Field and starring Cate Blanchett as a renowned conductor and composer in the international world of classical music named Lydia Tr. It is Field's first film since the release of 'Little Children' (2006). The cast also includes Nomie Merlant, Nina Hoss, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, and Mark Strong.

'Tr' premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2022, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on October 7, 2022, by Focus Features.

Premise

Set in the international world of classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tr, widely considered one of the greatest living composer/conductors and first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. The film is an exceptionally detailed portrait of a promethean artist eventually hoisted on her own petard.

Production

It was announced in April 2021 that Cate Blanchett would star in the film, which will be written and directed by Todd Field. In a statement accompanying the film's teaser trailer in August 2022, Field said that he wrote the script specifically for Blanchett, and that if she said no, "the film would have never seen the light of day." In September 2021, Nina Hoss and Nomie Merlant joined the cast, and Hildur Gunadttir became the film's composer.

Filming began in August 2021 in Berlin. In an interview with 'The Guardian' in October, Mark Strong revealed that he had finished filming scenes for the film. In November, it was reported that Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, and Sylvia Flote had joined the cast. Kauer is a BritishGerman classical cellist who studied at the Royal Academy of Music.

Release

'Tr' had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2022, and its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3, 2022.

Concept album

A concept album will be released in January 2023 featuring Gunadttir's score as well as a rehearsal of Gustav Mahler's fifth symphony with Blanchett conducting the Dresdner Philharmonie. Cellist Sophie Kauer is also heard on the album playing Elgars Cello Concerto, backed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Natalie Murray Beal.

Reception

'Tr' received widespread critical acclaim, with particular praise drawn toward Blanchett's performance and Field's direction. At its Venice premiere, the film was met with a six-minute standing ovation from the audience.
