Summary

Sho's girlfriend breaks up with him for being boring, which devastates him. While sleeping at home, he is woken by his father who is making a surprise visit. Sho is surprised to see an urn full of the ashes of an aunt he has never met; his fathers sister, Matsuko. Sho is asked to help clean her old room, and while doing so, he gradually learns more about the life of his estranged aunt.

During Matsuko's early life, she had a troubled childhood. She struggled to gain the attention of her father, whose affection was mostly given by her chronically ill sister, Kumi. This created an imbalance where Matsuko's needs were less likely to be met.

From 1970 to 1971, Matsuko was a very popular junior high school music teacher in kawa, Fukuoka. However, she was sexually harassed by the vice-principal when one of her students, Ryu, committed theft. He had stolen money from the property that they stayed at during a school trip. Matsuko took the blame for him by stealing another person's money, and when Ryu joined in on the lie, Matsuko was fired from her job. Infuriated by the vice-principal's decision, Matsuko returned home, angrily packing her stuff, and left despite her sister Kumi trying to stop her.

Few months later, Matsuko's brother, Norio, accidentally met her and Matsuko tells him that she is in a relationship with Tetsuya, an unknown manga-writer who always abuses her for money, and she can't get her job as a prostitute. Norio later blames her for destroying the family and gives her some money while telling her that Matsuko's father had died 3-months after she left. Returning home, Tetsuya began to abuse her when she let Tetsuya's enemy, Okano, see his work and walks away until night, she received a note reading: "Please forgive me for being born". During a rainstorm, she witnesses Tetsuya commit suicide by standing in front of a train. She is devastated.

Six months later, she is in love with Tetsuya's rival, Okano. Everything went fine until one day, Matsuko show up at his house and his wife responds. After Okano's wife forces him to confess, he begins to blame Matsuko and break up with her before telling her that she has a beautiful body and gives her some money. Because of Okano's word before leaving, Matsuko goes to audition again for prostitute job and she got hired. A couple month later, Matsuko return home to see her father's diary and cried after she saw every last write of each day said: "No news from Matsuko". Kumi suddenly see her and try to hug her, but Matsuko push her away and ran back into the car.

At 26 years old, Matsuko is engaged in a relationship with Onodera as a ditch attempt to profit from her Turkish Bath experience. Onodera is a pompous and vain pimp who ropes young, impressionable women into his trade to cheat them of their hard-earned money. When she asks him for her 6-month salary, he responds with nonchalance that he has already given the money to another girl, whom he will soon move in with. Their squabble soon escalates into a physical fight, as he pins Matsuko to a dressing mirror and insults her appearance. In retaliation, Matsuko takes a knife and attempts to maim Onodera, but he chokes her against the wall. On the brink of losing consciousness, Matsuko is seen having flashbacks to the shopowner whose money was stolen during the school trip. The knife Matsuko grabbed then accidentally slips from her hands, landing on Onodera's foot. As he wails over his injury on the floor and threatens to sue Matsuko, she seizes the opportunity to stab Onodera to death, in a fit of rage and despair. Afterwards, she tries to commit suicide by jumping off the building, but this too was futile as her hands instinctively held onto the balcony railings.
